Speaker Series: Marilu Cisneros

Marilu Cisneros, Director of Community Schools in West Marin since 2023, speaks about Basic Needs Closets, an initiative to provide essential items such as clothing, toiletries, hygiene products, and cleaning supplies. This resource will be available to families in need, ensuring that they can get the help they need in real-time, without having to navigate complicated systems or wait for external resources. The Basic Needs Closets will not only support students' educational success but also improve their overall well-being by alleviating the daily strain of not having access to these essentials.

Marilu Cisneros is a bilingual and bicultural professional who migrated from Michoaćan, Mexico, to the U.S. at a young age. As the Director of Community Schools in West Marin since 2023, Marilu leads district-wide efforts to create inclusive and supportive systems for students and families. She brings a strong background in media relations, communications, case management, community engagement, and parent support. Her work at Shoreline Unified focuses on building partnerships, removing barriers to student success, and ensuring families have access to vital resources. Since November 2023,

Marilu works to uplift the diverse voices and foster meaningful engagement. Her journey allows her to deeply connect with the experiences of many Shoreline Unified students, particularly newcomers and English learners.

Meadow Evans is a birth doula, massage therapist, and environmental educator working with students at Bolinas-Stinson School. She lives in Bolinas with her husband, Keith, and son, Emrys. Meadow played a key role in developing Young Stewards, an outdoor afterschool program inspired by Veena Lucas' vision, and has been deeply involved since its launch in 2017-18.

Presenting to the Rotary Club of West Marin, Meadow will share insights into Young Stewards of the Land, a program for 5th–8th graders focused on self-stewardship, land stewardship, and community care. Through hands-on learning with local specialists in the West Marin outdoors, students develop skills that connect them to nature and their community. Earth Allies, a similar program, extends this approach to younger students.

The program fosters mentorship between college, middle school, and elementary students, guided by Program Coordinators. Each week, students explore Bolinas, engaging with specialists who introduce skills and knowledge at the intersection of human experience and the natural world.

Alison Healy, a Marin County native, is a nonprofit leader and entrepreneur. During the pandemic, she co-founded Bay Area Marine Services and serves as Commodore of the International Yachting Fellowship of Rotarians (IYFR). As former CEO of Alliance for Smiles, she oversaw numerous international Rotary grants and missions.

Presenting to the Rotary Club of West Marin, Alison will share updates on her nonprofit, Pathways 4 Thriving, particularly its work with Floating Doctors, which provides medical care to 8,000 indigenous Ngäbe people in Panama. These communities, accessible only by water, rely on Floating Doctors for healthcare, including maternal health, family planning, dental, and veterinary services. The program has significantly reduced birth rates and improved health outcomes.

Pathways 4 Thriving collaborates with local organizations to support economic development, health, and sustainability through Rotary grants. Floating Doctors also offers a seven-day Immersion Program, where volunteers contribute to clinics while learning about Ngäbe culture.

Alison will sell handmade bags from Colombia to raise funds for this mission. Learn more at pathways4thriving.org.

Marlene Capra will speak about  SPEAK SAFE: Save Adolescents from Exploitation. SPEAK SAFE is a multigenerational task force working together to bring awareness to youth exploitation and victimization in our local Marin County community. We are engaging decision-makers in our school boards, the foster care system, LBGTQ+ communities, and more to advocate for unrepresented and underserved youth. By collaborating with local law enforcement officials, we can gather targeted data and information on local cases, keeping our education programming and seminars current and hyper-relevant to the Marin County area.

Marlene Capra is the Founder and Executive Director of SpeakSAFE
: Save Adolescents from Exploitation, which aims to fund and implement a collaborative approach to provide preventative education on human trafficking and exploitation of youth in the Bay Area. In addition to managing all aspects of the program, Marlene personally conducts training in conjunction with a youth team, all of whom are survivors of abuse. Both in person and on social media, they present on exploitation and the victimization of youth and what support is needed to encourage them to find their voices and come forward, enabling them to find assistance and healing.  Through this forum, victims have mobilized their voices in partnership to make lasting change while working together on this initiative.

Jeff and Carol England speak about The Foundation for Climate Restoration (F4CR). They are working to make climate restoration the overarching goal of climate action by the decade's end. Climate restoration means not just reducing emissions. It means reclaiming a historically safe climate for this and future generations and the nature we’re part of. We need to restore the pre-industrial climate by 2050 while Earth systems are still intact enough to do so. We know how to do so!

Restoring a safe climate requires a paradigm shift. Most people don’t yet know it’s possible, so they’re not calling for it. That’s why F4CR’s mission is to generate the understanding, social license, and will to restore the climate. This, in turn, will allow for funding and implementing real climate-restoration-scale solutions.

F4CR works through advocacy, education & communications, and motivation. Our members—volunteers of all ages and from all walks of life—make it happen!

Lori Davis founded Sanzuma in Marin County in 2012. Thanks to generous donations, Sanzuma began by delivering solar ovens to small villages in remote regions of Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, and Mexico. These ovens allowed villagers to cook food without cutting down trees for wood, make income, and purify their water—all without electricity or propane! Their forests would stay intact, and they would not have lung problems and burns from cooking over a smokey fire. As we expanded our solar oven program to other villages, we saw an urgent need for a basic, sustainable, healthy food system paired with nutrition education.

Being true to Sanzuma's motto, "Your health should not be a reflection of your economic status, " we took a closer look and found the same challenges in Marin County. Thus, Sanzuma began developing our School Farm-to-Cafeteria program. Since 2013 we have converted many existing school gardens into producing farms, taught thousands of nutrition classes while educating the students how to grow their own food. The bounty from the gardens is then processed through the San Rafael City School lunch program for their salad bars. This is all done through an environmental lens.

Sanzuma has fostered deep partnerships with Health and Human Services of Marin County, The CDFA, Giving Marin, and many others. With these partners, Sanzuma started the Farm to Student Collaborative. As a group, we have vowed to do whatever it takes to increase awareness and implement an equitable food system at all Marin County Schools through programs that are possible within each school’s constraints.
