Louisa Gloger, Executive Director of Bolinas Museum speaks to the Rotary Club of West Marin
Gloger assumed the role of Executive Director on January 18, 2022. She led the museum into its next chapter and celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2023. Upon taking the role, Gloger shared, “As a longtime Bolinas resident, I am inspired by our community’s commitment to the arts and celebrating diverse voices.” Gloger is particularly interested in the work of museums at this pivotal moment as arts institutions worldwide look to address social justice issues and amplify the voices of underrepresented artists and communities. “Bolinas has always been at the forefront regarding inclusion and original thinking, and the museum will continue to be a leader in these areas with our exhibitions, collections, and community programming.”
Gloger moved to Bolinas in 1988 at the age of 10. She spent her formative years experiencing the art and culture of Bolinas and was particularly inspired by the art classes she took while a student at the Bolinas school. The daughter of a family of artists, Gloger credits her mother with first introducing her to a lifelong love of art, artists, and museums. While a student at the Branson School, she interned at the De Young Museum in San Francisco with the Director of Education. She went on to study Art History at Williams College, and after graduation, worked at the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, where she assisted Curator of Prints and Drawings Virginia Clayton in mounting a seminal exhibition on American folk art, "Drawing on America's Past: Folk Art, Modernism, and the Index of American Design." She returned to the Bay Area and worked for John Berggruen Gallery, before successfully launching her art consulting business. She also started a cancer support and awareness non-profit and serves on Smithsonian's Archives of American Art and Headlands Center for the Arts boards.
